American Medical Response Pays $9 Million To Settle Case

American Medical Response Inc., one of the nation's largest ambulance providers, agreed in October 2006 to pay the U.S. $9 million to resolve allegations the company violated the False Claims Act.  Relator Daniel Block received an 18% Relators share of the $9 Million recovery.

Dan Block discovered that the ambulance company was allegedly paying kickbacks to Texas hospitals in exchange for referrals. The kickbacks were in the form of "swapping arrangements" in which the ambulance company gave the hospital transportation discounts in exchange for referral of ambulance transports paid for by Medicare.

He brought his case to our office, and we filed a False Claims Lawsuit against AMR in 2000.  The settlement in 2006 represented a hard-fought victory for Mr. Block, who was fired for his refusal to “play ball” and do what everyone else did.
